Terroir and Winemaking

Sagrantino di Montefalco is Umbria's most distinctive contribution to Italian wine — one of the most tannic red grape varieties in the world, capable of producing intensely structured, age-worthy wines that require years in the cellar to soften. Orvieto, Umbria's best-known white, offers a lighter, more immediately approachable style made primarily from Trebbiano and Grechetto. Between Sagrantino's power and Orvieto's freshness, Umbria spans a wide stylistic range while remaining relatively undiscovered compared to its more famous Tuscan neighbor.
