Trentino

Introduction

Trentino, the southern half of the Trentino-Alto Adige region, shares Alto Adige's alpine setting but leans more fully Italian in language and winemaking style. Its cool-climate vineyards produce some of Italy's freshest and most precise wines, both still and sparkling.

Terroir and Winemaking

Trentodoc, the region's traditional-method sparkling wine made from Chardonnay and Pinot Nero, was one of Italy's earliest producers of Champagne-method sparklers and remains a benchmark alongside Franciacorta. In the valley floors and lower hillsides, Trentino also produces approachable still whites from Pinot Grigio, Nosiola and Müller-Thurgau, while Teroldego Rotaliano, grown on the gravelly Campo Rotaliano plain, is the region's most distinctive red — deeply colored, with dark fruit and a characteristic bitter almond note on the finish.
