Introduction

Marche, on Italy's central Adriatic coast, balances maritime influence with hillside terroir to produce some of Italy's most underrated wines — most notably Verdicchio, one of the country's most versatile and food-friendly white grapes.

Terroir and Winemaking

Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi, grown inland from the Adriatic coast, produces wines of laser-sharp acidity and fresh citrus and green almond character, with the best Riserva bottlings capable of aging for a decade or more — an unusual trait for an Italian white. On the red side, Marche is home to Rosso Conero and Rosso Piceno, both built around Montepulciano grapes and offering approachable, food-friendly character. The region's amphora-shaped Verdicchio bottle has become an iconic symbol of Marche winemaking, instantly recognizable on wine shop shelves.
