Introduction

Basilicata, one of Italy's smallest and least-known wine regions, centers almost entirely around a single, remarkable appellation: Aglianico del Vulture, grown on the volcanic slopes of an extinct volcano in the region's north.

Terroir and Winemaking

Mount Vulture's volcanic soils give Aglianico — the same grape behind Campania's Taurasi — a distinctive mineral backbone and structure that has earned Basilicata's wines comparisons to Barolo for their tannin and aging potential. Vineyards here are planted at meaningful altitude, which helps preserve acidity despite the south's generally warm climate. Production remains small and largely artisanal, with a handful of dedicated producers working to bring wider recognition to a region that, despite its potential, remains one of Italy's most under-the-radar wine destinations.
