Introduction

Sardinia, Italy's second-largest island, developed its wine culture in relative isolation from mainland Italy, resulting in a distinctive set of indigenous grape varieties rarely found elsewhere and a winemaking identity shaped as much by Spanish and North African influence as by Italian tradition.

Terroir and Winemaking

Vermentino di Gallura, the island's only DOCG wine, comes from granite soils and sea breezes in the north of the island, producing intensely aromatic whites with white peach, citrus blossom and a distinctive bitter almond finish. Cannonau, genetically related to Grenache, is Sardinia's flagship red — sun-baked, full-bodied and deeply colored, thriving in the island's hot, dry Mediterranean climate. Together, Vermentino and Cannonau capture the essential character of Sardinian wine: maritime freshness paired with the intensity of a genuinely southern, sun-drenched terroir.
